Treatment of herniated disc
Non-surgical treatment:
Rest: Avoid activities that increase pain and follow a lifestyle that is less stressful to the spine.
Physiotherapy: Strengthen the muscles that support the spine, and improve flexibility through special exercises.
Medications:
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to relieve pain and swelling.
Muscle relaxants to relieve muscle spasms.
Neuralgia pain relievers such as gabapentin in cases of severe nerve pain.
Heat therapy: Use hot or cold compresses to relieve pain and swelling.
2. Surgical treatment (in severe cases):
Discectomy of the disc causing pressure: If the herniated disc is pressing heavily on the nerves and causing severe pain or loss of function, surgery may be recommended to remove the affected part.
Vertebral fusion: In some cases, vertebrae may be fused together to reduce pain and stabilize the spine.
