Learn about the different blood pressure levels
Blood pressure is the force that blood exerts on the walls of the arteries as it is pumped from the heart to the rest of the body. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is expressed as two numbers:
Systolic pressure: The top number, which is the blood pressure when the heart contracts to pump blood.
Diastolic pressure: The bottom number, which is the blood pressure when the heart is at rest between beats.
Blood pressure levels
Normal blood pressure: Less than 120/80 mmHg.
High blood pressure (prehypertension): 120-129 mmHg systolic and less than 80 mmHg diastolic.
High blood pressure (stage 1): 130-139 mmHg systolic or 80-89 mmHg diastolic.
High blood pressure (stage 2): 140 mmHg or higher systolic or 90 mmHg or higher diastolic.
Hypertensive crisis: More than 180/120 mmHg, requiring immediate medical attention.
Causes of high blood pressure
Genetic factors: Having a family history of high blood pressure.
Obesity: Being overweight puts extra pressure on your arteries.
Stress and emotional stress: May cause a temporary increase in blood pressure.
Diet: Eating large amounts of salt, saturated fats, or sugars.
Sedentary lifestyle: Not exercising regularly.
Age: The risk of high blood pressure increases with age.
